Means are self-reported survey averages and are not directly comparable: each covers a different set of countries, a different age floor, and a different definition of "gamer." The 2024 blended figure is a secondary synthesis, not a single primary survey.
Notice what the table cannot show you: the median. Not one of these headline surveys publishes it, and that omission is the whole problem. A US survey bucket from March 2025 found that the single most common answer to "how many hours a week do you game" was 1 to 5 hours — the modal player sits below the published mean, not at it. When the mode and the median both fall under the average, the average is being carried by the people at the far right of the chart.

The catch: across those six single-player RPGs the mean ran on average 3.0 times the median, and for a never-ending live-service game like Dota 2 it hit 39.7 times (16Best analysis). The rule is mechanical: the more open-ended the game, the fatter the right tail, the more the mean detaches from the middle. Weekly-playtime surveys sample the same skewed population — a handful of respondents who game 30, 40, 50 hours a week sit in the same dataset as the majority who play three — so the survey "average" is inflated by exactly the same physics. The gradient is not static — it is rotating. The heaviest cohort today, teens at 15.2 hours, is not a fixed feature of being young; it is a cohort effect that travels.
